Authorities search for a woman who got off a cruise ship in Alaska to hike and didn't return

Authorities say a woman visiting Alaska’s capital city on a cruise ship did not return from a hike she said she was taking. The Juneau Police Department says it received a report Tuesday afternoon that the 62-year-old from Kentucky told relatives she was going on the hike and had not returned to the vessel for its departure. The state Department of Public Safety says she planned to take a tram popular with tourists partially up a mountain overlooking downtown Juneau and continue from there. Search teams were out Tuesday and Wednesday.

Day 6 - Ketchikan, AK

Most cruise ships that visit Ketchikan dock in the downtown area. Norwegian docks in Ward Cove which is a 10-minute bus ride from downtown. The cruise terminal is housed in the former pulp mill. The e-bike tour that I took followed a water pipeline that used to supply the mill through the forest to the dam at Connell Lake. Before heading back from the lake, there was a short nature walk and break that included s'mores around a campfire.

During the break one of the guides talked up a specialty donut place called Jellyfish Donuts. Most of our group ended up there after the tour. I got the Cinnamon Toast Crunch one.

Day 5 - Icy Strait Point - Hoonah, AK

My time on shore started with a gondola ride 1,300 feet up a mountain. More adventurous people descend via the mile-long zip line. Instead I opted for a tram tour through the forest before taking the gondola back down. It's too bad it was so foggy because I'm sure there's a great view from up there.

A second gondola takes people to the area where the shops, restaurants, and beach are, but the line was long and moving slowly, so I decided to walk, which turned out to be lucky. High up in a tree just off the trail near the water was a bald eagle nest with an eagle sitting on a nearby branch.

Day 4 was a split day. The first part was a brief stop in Juneau before sailing the Endicott Arm with the intention of seeing Dawes Glacier. However, conditions did not allow us to make it all the way to the glacier.

The excursion in Juneau was a 4-mile hike on the Eastern Glacier Loop Trail at Mendenhall Glacier. The rainforest has views of Lake Mendenhall as well as the glacier plus plenty of waterfalls.

The glacier has retreated about 800 feet since I was here last year and is expected to retreat off the lake completely by the end of the summer. It's kind of a bummer but is still amazing to see.
