@simeon

I had an alike conclusion after learning its current possibilities, by active daily use in the last two weeks or so.

On what really instance matters:

@taylorlorenz

Most important than expecting full search, or checking Local/Federated timelines, in here, the key skill to learn is a continuous curation of follows: Accounts & Tags:

@ceperez

It is by design!
Search is limited to 4 types:

#Hashtags
Usernames
User URLs
Post URLs

https://midrange.tedium.co/issues/how-mastodon-search-works/

Follow up to 5 tags in pinned col:
1 Enable ‚Advanced Web Interface‘
2 Search tag, click result of tag search, that will appear on the column further on the right side
3 Then click icon in column top right —> Settings —> +Pin
4 Include additional tags for this column

Explaining the cultural dynamics that have led Mastodon to have a search engine that barely works by traditional standards.

IMHO after those three confidences in your chosen instance:
1 Impressum/Entity
2 Operators
3 Moderators
then the less important to consider:

4 Local timeline
5 Federated timeline

(Both become difficult of usability once an instance reaches beyond thousand accounts)

In any case, don't forget:

Continuous curation of follows: Accounts & Tags

Those are people that seem to forget that the birdie site required some time of learning in order to use it. They even added onboarding flow in 2014:

Twitter’s New Onboarding Flow Still Misses the Point

This week, Twitter rolled out an overhauled onboarding experience for new users of the social network. We previously ran the old one through its paces and thought that the experience showed why the company is struggling to grow, but does th
