“What Fassbinder’s films show is how difficult it is to change the world and how difficult it is to live in it.… Even fleeting moments of tenderness can seem impossible in an evil world….” 📽️ 🇩🇪 🎞️ #film #movies #cinema #NewGermanCinema #CineMastodon #RainerWernerFassbinder

‘Nothing but defeats’: Fassbinder beyond fragments - Another Gaze: A Feminist Film Journal

Before I began reading Ian Penman’s Fassbinder A Thousand Mirrors, I wondered how I might have gone about writing about...

Another Gaze: A Feminist Film Journal

I've been watching THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT (#Fassbinder, 1972).

So good.

It's essentially, at least thus far, like a one-room play, all claustrophobic, stifling, and intense. Wonderfully acted and shot (brilliant staging and framing), and an intense character study.

Fassbinder Serials - Metrograph

A dervish of creative activity, in-between making films for the cinema Rainer Werner Fassbinder was a genius at extracting funding from West Germany’s various regional public broadcasting stations. Not only did this result in a bushel of telefilms, but extraordinary ventures into the serial form, including the two-part World on a Wire, and the five episodes of Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day. Even when making work for small-screen broadcast, Fassbinder’s vision was never less than capaciously cinematic—so leave the boob tube at home and see the only real “Must See TV” writ large.

Alice in the Cities (Wim Wenders, 1974)

The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick (Wim Wenders, 1972). A film centering the everyday banalities in the day-to-day life of a former professional goalkeeper who has just stalked and murdered a cinema usherette before skipping town. An ambiguous character study with a Taxi Driver-esque sense of alienation and detachment. Based on a novel by Peter Handke. #Film #Movie #CineMastodon #PhysicalMedia #BluRay #NewGermanCinema #NowWatching

A desk lamp, telephone, torpedo or shotgun don't have emotions. But it can affect people emotionally in how it's used. Opera is if not anything, full of amplified emotions. An opera singer is asked that in Act I, he has a glimmer of hope on his face, even though in Act V, everyone knows the tragedy strikes. How can he? He sang in that opera 28 times before, he must know what happens at the end. He replies repeatedly, "I don't know that in Act I."
