Building digital fluency in the C-suite and beyond

Digital acuity has become a strategic business imperative, especially at incumbents with little IT legacy. Here, CIOs share how they are developing digital and data fluency across their organizations to drive better buy-in, more IT funding, and new business opportunities.

I’m off to St. Petersburg, Florida today to give the Day 3 opening keynote to the annual #PRISM Association #CIO event.

Will be talking the latest #IT and #tech trends to the nation’s public retirement system CIOs.

A vital macro digital trend:

Today's silos of functional efficiency are steadily morphing into new top-level org structures that instead manage the three main value streams of our orgs:

- #CustomerExperience
- #EmployeeeExperience
- #PartnerExperience

CIOs hold onto clout as new roles enter the #CSuite

My take: The #CIO still has control of most of the systems and data that run the business. They can, if they build a strong vision, drive the #diitaltransformation agenda.

Your Strategy Needs a Story

My take: Compelling storytelling, especially with data and narrative examples, is one of the most powerful techniques for #IT leaders to drive change.

Your Strategy Needs a Story

Business strategy is usually born of a highly rational process, grounded in facts and analysis. Storytelling, often associated with fiction and entertainment, may seem like the antithesis of strategy. But the two are not incompatible. A clever strategy on paper is only the starting point for engaging those who will implement it. Strategies must also be communicated and understood — and they must motivate action. Through stories, mere facts and information are turned into a shared mental model of how the business works and where it is heading. Knowing how to construct such a strategy story as a shared, and evolvable mental model can not only improve implementation but also greatly increase a company’s rate of learning, which can be a key source for competitive advantage in today’s fast-paced world.

#ESG Will Have a Rocky 2023. #Sustainability Will Be Just Fine.

A big reason: ESG does not equal sustainability. And the former became more politicized. But both will continue apace as important guides for the future of business.

My take: Sadly, the data continues to show that most board members are the least prepared execs on both topics. Tech-qualified execs are seriously in demand.
