So okay I've been trying to check out whether using my Linux PC as a guitar amp would be viable and I keep running into this NAM thing (https://www.neuralampmodeler.com/)

And very little else? And I'm like... come on. The only amp sim available, or at least one so popular it drowns out all other options, and it's based on a neural network? That sounds like "AI" hype driven overkill, right? At least to me as a complete newcomer.

Is there really nothing decent that just takes the obvious approach of applying simple, mathematically understandable algorithms to produce effects? Does it make sense somehow to use a neural network to do this? Is it performant? What's going on?

Guitar amp emulation went from $2000 for the AxeFX in 2006 to 0$ for the NAM plugin. 🤣

Did you know that #killswitchengage were using #Laney Amps for quite some time? They even used the Ironheart which I happen to have at home!
So I watched a few rig rundowns of their gear and copied their settings (#Amp only) and did a #NAM #neuralampmodeler profile for everyone to download and play.
Remember to put a Tubescreamer in front of the amp!

Check out frankyfire's neural amp head capture for guitar, bass and recording: This is the capture of my Laney Ironheart IRT60 as it used to be played by Killswitch Engage live. I used the information of some rig rundown videos on Youtube to dial it in. IMPORTANT: If you really want to recreate their tone, you would need to add a Maxon OD808 in front of this profile. They used it without drive, full level and an unknown amount of Tone. I assume that was set to about 1-2 o'clock. Speakers should be Celestion Vintage30's. They used the Lead channel exclusively. For clean tones they had another Amp with them which was miced up behind the stage. Later they used the Tony Iommi Edition of this Amp, presumably because of flaws with the gain structure of the Ironheart. This collection contains Captures including and excluding the Power Amp. This was made by using a DI Box in the FX Loop of the AMP and an St.Rock React:IR Load Box. Neural Amp Modeling

Re-amping Let’s say you’re a guitar player and want to record your track of a song. Typically you would enter the studio with your guitar, amp and cabinet and spend record what’s needed. But let’s say you decide to record your guitar without any processing by pedals or amps, glue the good takes together and then process that track with pedals and amps. That process is called re-amping. Now let’s say you want that guitar track processed by a plugin, not hardware. The process of recording would be almost the same, but the process of getting the plugin to sound like an amp is quite a challenge. Today if we want to emulate the whole rig, it is best if it’s done in two parts: NAM and IR. IR is much older, and it stands for Impulse Response. NAM stands for Neural Amp Modeler and it’s just a few years old. IR is used to capture the sonic characteristic of reverb and guitar cabinets, the most. It can do other things, but for now let’s just say that IR in our case is used to emulate guitar cabinets. NAM in our case is used to capture and emulate preamp. It can also capture full rig but you can’t use any effects that are time based, like reverb or delay. The reason why I like NAM for preamp and IR for cabinet is because that way I can use IR cabinets captured over past two decades. As NAM is relatively new, it still doesn’t have such a huge ecosystem.

Everything recorded with #Ardour too. 2x SM57 for the guitar cabs, 1x D112 for the bass, 1x SM57 for the snare, 1x D112 for the kick and 2x AT2020 as overheads. Positioned randomly, just trying out some stuff. Added an extra guitar later using #NeuralAmpModeler and #LSP Impulse Response.

Short sound clip. It's quite sloppy, we rehearsed this one only a couple of times, it's brand new. Working title: Zero Trust.

Ok, might need some info.

The training seems quite fast and the trainer says that it found the gpu. Afaik only Nvidia supports CUDA, right?!?

So why is there no work load monitored in the task manager for the RTX? And why gets the Raedon so heated?

If my resources were baller-level I would give blank checks to both the Aum/AudioShare (flawless, impeccable design of the gui, layout and coding as well) guy and to the Neural Amp modeler guy. I would have them design a Tonex-killer. Because Tonex’s gui is as stupid and insulting as its technological brilliance is genius and powerful. Basically turn Tonex into the Blackberry of the guitar amp modeling game.
