Il manufatto dell'XI secolo, che raffigura la conquista normanna dell'Inghilterra del 1066, sarà esposto al British Museum a partire da settembre e il ministro della Cultura francese, Catherine Pegard, ha dichiarato che verranno prese tutte le precauzioni possibili per proteggerlo.
Normalmente esposto nella città di Bayeux, nel nord della Francia, il prestito dell'arazzo è stato concordato dal presidente Emmanuel Macron per celebrare le relazioni tra le due sponde della Manica.
Alcuni esperti hanno tuttavia espresso preoccupazione per i possibili danni al ricamo di 70 metri, che presenta già oltre 24.000 macchie, 9.000 fori e 30 strappi.
Ma Pegard ha affermato di aver "trovato particolarmente ingiuste le insinuazioni di incompetenza che alcuni hanno cercato di diffondere".
"Nulla, assolutamente nulla, è stato lasciato al caso, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il trasporto di quest'opera", ha dichiarato in una conferenza stampa a Parigi.

The Bayeux medieval tapestry, of French origin, will be secretly transported to Britain within a shock-absorbing container to be exhibited in London this year, announced the Culture Minister on Wednesday.

The 11th-century artifact, depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066, will be exhibited at the British Museum starting in September, and the French Culture Minister, Catherine Pegard, stated that all possible precautions would be taken to protect it.

Normally displayed in the city of Bayeux, in northern France, the loan of the tapestry has been agreed upon by President Emmanuel Macron to celebrate the relations between the two sides of the Channel.

However, some experts have expressed concern about the potential damage to the 70-meter-long embroidery, which already has over 24,000 stains, 9,000 holes and 30 tears.

But Pegard stated that she had “found particularly unfair the insinuations of incompetence that some have tried to spread.”

“Nothing, absolutely nothing, was left to chance, especially concerning the transport of this work,” she said at a press conference in Paris.
