There seem to be the makings of a workable solution - made up of simple steps. First as #sirandrewdillon suggests review the #nihce valuation of statistical life and realign it with the figure used elsewhere in the #uk government. This will both allow approval of a tranche of new drugs and therapies for the #nhs and give a message of consistency and rationality - both of which should raise the 'animal spirits' of #bigpharma .
By contrast I saw two quite useful comments in print yesterday. The first was a letter to the #guardian from #sirandrewdillon - who was the long serving head of #NIHCE from its inception. It suggests among other things an immediate review of the level at which the statistical value of life has been set to be done jointly between #NIHCE and #hmtreasury - the latter having presumably to buy into its results!
After about ten years a carve out developed for some
#cancer treatments - which were allowed a higher implied value of life. At the time I was part of this process - as an unremunerated lay member of the group implementing this for #london . More recently the valuation of a statistical life elsewhere in government has been increased leading to a major divergence between #NIHCE and everywhere else.
