Been doing a lot of manual reading re: garage door openers. None of this is in promotional materials, so buckle up.

Chamberlain / LiftMaster have decided that 315Mhz RF is just too permissive and allows third party competition. The latest models of myQ openers are basically 900mhz RF using whatever proprietary codes. This is sold under the guise of "SeCuRiTy."

They market this as the next iteration of their Security+3.0. This has nothing to do with security and everything to do with vendor lock-in and subscriptions.

All vehicles with homelink? Obsolete. No more "pairing" as you only need to ""download the app."" Oh you have a Tesla with the myQ app built in? Monthly subscription!

I have no idea who the fuck wants their garage door to act as a security provider, but I know I don't need this headache in my life.

TL;DR:

If you are replacing a motor unit, find something that still supports Homelink v4 , as anything newer is just DRM lock-in with the privilege of monthly subscriptions for the functionality you expect.

Well I couldn't get the garage keypad of my dreams with an NFC reader and RFID keychain tags, so I did the next best thing and put an NFC tag on the evil no good very bad MyQ keypad so I can open the garage door by tapping my phone against it. ​

And yes, I am absolutely petty enough that I stuck the tag right over the MyQ logo because Chamberlain can eat muh loafy butt ​

big fat fuck you to Chamberlain ​ MyQ is the worst thing since BMW tried to charge a subscription for heated seats. I have a Konnected puck sitting on the opener now so at least I get the integration I actually want, but I can't banish the MyQ setup entirely since people use it.
