Why One Man Is Fighting for Our Right to Control Our #GarageDoor Openers
If companies can modify internet-connected products and charge subscriptions after people have already purchased them, what does it mean to own anything anymore?
After frustration with #Chamberlain's #MyQ and shutting out 3rd Parties, he developed #RATGDO, for Rage Against the #GarageDoorOpener, an #Esp32 based that workds over your local network using #ESPHome or #HomeKit.

Why One Man Is Fighting for Our Right to Control Our Garage Door Openers

If companies can modify internet-connected products and charge subscriptions after people have already purchased them, what does it mean to own anything anymore?

Garage doors, #enshitified with wireless. The home I bought has some 10 year old Liftmasters that work with #Ratgdo controllers. Even the fact that those workarounds are required for the utterly horrible MyQ devices was enough to swear me off of intentionally buying #Chamberlain products, but their need to continually make worse products takes it further. https://www.theverge.com/tech/839294/chamberlain-myq-garage-door-opener-update-blocks-aftermarket-controllers #smarthome
Chamberlain blocks smart home integrations with its garage door openers β€” again

Security+ 3.0 kills compatibility with popular smart home platforms enabled by controllers from Tailwind, Meross, and Ratgdo.

I bought two #ratgdo units when they first came out, and use them with #esphome . Much better experience than the MyQ stuff ever was.

Highly recommended.

RATGDO. WiFi control board for your garage door opener

Today, I installed a RATGDO 32 for my new Liftmaster 98022 garage door opener.

Since Chamberlin/Liftmaster has closed access to their MyQ system, this is the only way to connect your HomeAssistant/HomeKit/other smart home system to the garage door. I've installed the HomeKit firmware on mine.

No cloud needed to control this inside my network, which is a big plus.

I think I might want to move the device to the underneath of the backup battery and stick it there, but there's plenty of room inside this door opener case for a clean install.

I have basically finished my post about how to configure Home Assistant Quick Actions on CarPlay but I can't publish it because I botched one of the screenshots!

Heck yeah. I got my ratgdo before my new garage door is installed.

Now let's hope the WiFi reaches that far out of my house.

@danie10 I have one, which I liked. Until last fall, when I discovered its one weakness: it opened the door randomly whenever it was well below freezing. If you live in Texas, I'm sure it would be great forever. But when you live in Minnesota it's a somewhat more serious problem.

I ended up adding a #ratgdo, https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo/ , which has been 100% reliable. The OpenGarage still tells me if the car is in the garage.
