When I contacted the artists with my usual questions for the mural of a boy with can on a string playing at telephone that I posted February 12th, they told me there was a matching mural with a girl on the other end of the string telephone. I'm back in Los Angeles, but my nephew lives there and was kind enough to get these photos for me.

"Currently, one in five children in our wealthy country lives in poverty; in Düsseldorf alone, that's 15,000 children, and none of the politicians are seriously considering changing this. In fact, poverty is likely to increase, both here and worldwide. As always, the children are the ones who suffer. Poverty, coupled with a widely acknowledged unjust education system, contributes to their downward mobility. It's a scandal that receives far too little public attention. The mural is already generating discussion, which is exactly the intention. 'Leith-born Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) is widely considered to be one of Scotland's greatest artists. He was a pioneer of what become known as the pop art movement and well known for his sculpture and graphic works, which attracted international acclaim.

Throughout his long career, numerous large-scale commissions saw his work transform public spaces, including the London Underground, while his sculptures continue to take pride of place in Edinburgh at the National Galleries of Scotland Modern One and at Picardy Place.

Every day thousands pass the 'Manuscript of Monte Cassino' - a large bronze hand, foot and ankle symbolising the destruction of war.

This striking new artwork, which was commissioned and sponsored by Friends of the Water of Leith Basins (FoWLB), Leith Late, and Gras Ltd, has been painted by Halla Groves-Raines - an Edinburgh-born artist and graduate of Glasgow School of Art. It replaces the 2014 black-and-white mural showing Paolozzi as a young man, which had to be removed because of weathering and deterioration.

2024 marked 100 years since Paolozzi's birth in 1924, so it was an appropriate time to refresh and reinstall the mural. Halla says: 'The mural will remain a portrait of Eduardo Paolozzi, this time as an older man, with some recognisable Leith landmarks in the background being treated in the pop art style, based on Paolozzi's own work'.'
