Te Hononga by New Zealand artists MIKE TUPAEA, ISAIAH RAMEKA @isaiahmatthewrameka, WALTER DEWES, POLLY SADLER AUTAHI HOOK, TAIHARURU ROSS, and BAILEY MUNRO at 37 John Street, Whangārei, New Zealand in 2019 with @wheku_design, @te.kapehu.whetu, and https://spacelamp.nz. Photos taken February 2025. Thanks to @streetartcities app for leading me to Whangārei.
⠀⠀⠀
"'Te Hononga' means connections, relationships or bonds. These are vital: for maintaining balance and empowering individuals and whanau through life's journey.
The tree in the centre of the mural symbolises whakapapa (family tree).
Whakapapa can be seen to mean 'to bring about grounding" to provide a solid base'. It serves as an acknowledgement and a reminder of our lineage and our heritage, that our chain of whanau, of blood and of birth has remained unbroken from the beginning.
There are four birds depicted in the mural. The first bird is the ruru/morepork.
In Mãori mythology, ruru are considered to be wise, acting as kaitiaki or guardians and have the power to protect, warn and advise. Above the ruru is the banner 'Aroaro meaning in the presence of.
The second set of birds are the huia, male and female. The male is painted blue with the shorter beak and the female is painted red with the longer beak. The birds are painted different colours to highlight how we can come together with our unique differences. The banner that flies over the huia bird reads 'aroha' which means love."

Life and Community by Trent Morgan @trentusm and community helpers at 12 Rust Avenue, Whangārei 0110, New Zealand. Photos taken February 2025. Thanks to @streetartcities app for leading me to Whangārei.
⠀⠀⠀
"The Arts Promotion Trust of Whangarei ran a competition to design a mural based around the above theme and Trent’s design was chosen as the winner. Trent tried to use as many images that represent life and community in Whangarei as he could. He also wanted to give the local community the opportunity to be involved in the physical painting of the mural. The mural depicts a weaving pattern, which symbolises the threads of the community woven together, and the green/blue side represents the Whangarei Heads, an iconic landscape for the area. Ultimately this mural project wasn’t as much about the end result as it was about community participation in an arts project. The reason for making the symbols solid blocks of colour was to help enable the community to take place using a paint by numbers concept. Trent focused on the drawing and outlines of the symbols and the local community helped with the painting. Another advantage of the solid colours is that it allows for easy touchup if needed." https://www.resene.co.nz/competition/murals/536.htm

STREET ART UTOPIA
By New Zealand artist Mike Te Paea, with Bryce and Troup and other students at Northern Health School, 96 Walton School, Whangārei 0110, New Zealand in December 2024. Photos taken February 2025. Thanks to @streetartcities app for leading me to Whangārei.

"The Northland Unit has been very lucky to have a special taonga (treasure) painted on the wall by our driveway in Whangarei. Our ākonga (students) had the opportunity to be involved, with sessions with the artist Mike Te Paea, to produce the manu (bird panels) that are bolted to the mural. One student, Troup, was also involved with the painting of the forest.
The mural depicts a golden tree, which represents the innate potential of each of our ākonga. When we can identify and cherish that potential, our ākonga (students) will fly. The manu (bird panels) represent the guardians of the ngāhere (forest)." @northernhealthschoolnz December 6, 2024

"Our culture is what keep us connected not only with the ones around us but also with our ancestors and ours descendants to come. And with this in mind it made sense to me to respectfully create my version of a strong Māori symbol directly related to ancestry and heritage. The Manaia.
Te Manaia is regarded as a kind deity that protects people and helps them communicate with their ancestors. It's regarded as a mythical being with a bird's head (sky), a body of a man or snake (earth) and the tail of a fish (sea), symbolizing the balance between the realms.
I depicted the Manaia in side profile as it's usually depicted in traditional carving and jewelry symbolizing its role as messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domains of the spirits, and between ancestors and descendants." @mateusbailon Feb 20, 2019

'I had the great pleasure to share some time in this beautiful country and be part of this experience, taking place in Whangarei, home of Ngatiwai "descendants of the sea" and descendants of Manaia, more than 1000 years ago they navigated the oceans coming from Hawaiki niu and also from the Americas as many Maori tribes believe, arriving in Aotearoa in "Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi their Iwi's Waka.
They shared with us their beliefs , reminding us the importance of honoring the past, our ancestors, those who built the events that made us who we are, and gave us a heritage, to also remember that no matter where we come from, in the end, we are all connected, we have always been.' @paola_delfin Feb 18, 2019
