The workstation the preceded the Ensoniq VFX-SD is … the Roland D20.

Sequencer, multitimbral, drums, effects and storage either onboard, on ram cards or floppy. Just like the ensoniq. But a whole year earlier.

Even had an optional programmer to make things easier, the PG10.

If we accept synths with smaller than fullsize keys, we can even find 2 more earlier candidates. See replies.
