Just stopped at my old friend the Niland mud spring. It hasn't changed very much since I wrote the story about it on my blog, but it did move far enough westward that they rebuilt the train track in its original location. The old section of Highway 111 is slowly being undermined, but the spring seems to have slowed its advance for a while.

Here the long story (with photos and memes!) if you want to read it. I had fun with it.

The Meandering Mud Pot - Mikal Jakubal

In 2015, in a nondescript piece of desert near Salton Sea in far SE California, a bubbling mud pot did something unprecedented: it started moving across the desert at a before-your-very-eyes pace, snacking on a railroad line, regional highway, oil pipelines and fiber optic cables that foolishly crossed its path.

Well, I didn't have anywhere to go on Thanksgiving, so I wrote a blog post about the roving mud spring of Salton Sea that has been eating railroads, roads and anything else in its path.

Someone here posted about it, so I had to go see it for myself when I was in the area a week ago. I have "a thing" for weird geology.
