Japan's Mogami warship is set for a showdown with the simpler and less expensive Type 31 frigate from the U.K. as the two nations compete to supply vessels to the Royal New Zealand Navy. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/05/12/japan/politics/japan-mogami-new-zealand/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #politics #newzealandjapanrelations #defense #msdf #mogami
Japan faces U.K. rival in race to build warships for New Zealand

A deal with New Zealand would build on an agreement Tokyo recently signed with Canberra to build the first three of 11 Mogami-class ships planned for Australia.

From ABC News Live:
“Japan's PM to visit Australia next week

By Stephen Dziedzic

Anthony Albanese has confirmed that Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit Australia next week.

The visit — which has long been rumoured in both Canberra and Tokyo — will see both leaders mark 50 years since Australia and Japan signed the landmark basic treaty of friendship and cooperation.

The two prime ministers will meet in Canberra on Monday.

Albanese says the basic treaty "laid the foundation for a partnership based on trust, shared values and mutual respect" and that he looks forward to welcoming Sanae Takaichi to Australia.

"Australia and Japan share strong strategic alignment. Our cooperation is essential to maintaining a peaceful, stable and prosperous region," he said

"Our enduring trade and investment ties underpin our relationship, creating jobs, providing opportunity and delivering economic growth to both our nations."

Given the #Mogami frigate deal, this is not unexpected and will probably mean more bilateral agreements are on the table, in particular #Defence and #Procurement.

I wonder if PM #Takaichi will get to address Parliament.
