The feud splits the AKP party and helps Erdogan.

The CHP party crisis is worsening, Turkey’s largest opposition force to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Following the appeals court ruling that removed its leadership on May 21st, police raided the party headquarters in Ankara to enforce the court’s ruling that annulled the 2023 congress and reinstated former President Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

Kilicdaroglu confirmed this morning that he will return to lead the headquarters on May 28th “to celebrate the anniversary of Eid with party supporters.” These words have a divisive effect on the opposition itself, the base and party, whose crisis can only play to Erdogan’s advantage.

The Role of Kilicdaroglu
The 1948-born politician had imposed his candidacy against Erdogan, who defeated him twice. In particular, in the 2023 presidential elections, Kilicdaroglu came under criticism for opposing the candidacy of (now deposed) Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

Internal Party Dispute
Despite the defeat, he continued to maintain leadership without resigning. This obstinacy created discontent among the party base; this latter group after repeated defeats demanded a generational change. This request was accepted at the late 2023 congress, in which Ozgur Ozel won.

The Appeal and the Ruling
An unhealed defeat, to the point that the initial lawsuit originated from a loyalist of Kilicdaroglu, the former Mayor of Antakya Lutfu Savas and some delegates who denounced procedural irregularities and fraud and demanded the removal of Ozel. Kilicdaroglu and his lost in the first instance and filed an appeal with the Appeals Chamber, which issued a ruling of “absolute nullity,” effectively invalidating the current leadership of the CHP and all actions subsequent to the 2023 congress.

Police Intervention
The crisis worsened throughout yesterday when lawyers representing Kilicdaroglu and a group of parliamentarians close to him went to the party headquarters to meet with Ozel. The outer entrance to the building was locked, leaving the lawyers to call the police, requesting enforcement of the ruling.

Tear Gas and Evacuation
The Ankara Prefect gave the police permission to proceed with the evacuation of the headquarters. Officers entered the complex and tear gas was used inside the building as they moved towards the twelfth floor, where Ozel was with several parliamentarians and the provincial president of Istanbul. An eviction notice was served on Ozel.

Ozel’s Response
After the police intervention, Ozel went before the cameras and tore up the notice before leaving the building. “Everyone does what is best for them – he said – we are leaving to reclaim our home and no one will chase us anymore.” Following this, he marched with parliamentarians and supporters towards the Turkish Parliament.

The CHP Beyond the Headquarters
During the march, Ozel stated that the CHP does not need a building to continue its political struggle. “The CHP was born among tents on battlefields,” he said. “To bring the CHP to power, a building is not needed, but the will to fight.” He then indicated the Turkish Parliament as a new symbolic location.

Reactions and Investigations
Today, Kilicdaroglu’s press advisor Atakan Sonmez responded to the statements, communicating the leader’s sadness over what had happened. During the night, the CHP mayors expressed support for Ozel, while Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas requested the convening of a congress within 45 days. Following the clashes, with some injuries, the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation.
