A follow-on from my post yesterday on Mingulay, here are some of the literally awesome climbing bits. It is very scary setting off on a 100 metre abseil down a sea cliff, hoping the rope is at the correct bit and won't just leave you dangling in the air above the waves. In the crop you can see the abseil ropes, and quite a few teams climbing. #Climbing #Seacliff #Mingulay #Hebrides #Scotland

Mingulay bay and ruined village, a beautiful spot. I had a week camping on this island, which has no services at all - no electricity, phones, toilets (hole in the ground). Water from the stream, which doubles as a fridge. A small fishing-boat gets you there and back. Wildlife abounds and the few people there are temporary, a couple of NT wardens and climbers (it has some of the best sea cliff climbing in the UK). #Mingulay #Scotland #Hebrides #Landscape #Beach #Ruin

A splash of summer colour, Sea Pink (America maritima) growing in a rocky crevice on a slabby hill slope near the sea. It’s surrounded by some wonderful Lichens – A bright yellow Caloplaca, a little grey clump of Ramalina siliquosa on the far left and sheets of a light grey crustose lichen covering other areas. In stormy weather this will be lashed with salt spray, but on a calm sunny day it’s paradise.

Not a pretty one! This dwarf wind-battered little tree is an Aspen (Popula tremula). Its claim to fame is that it's the only tree on the island of Mingulay in the Outer Hebrides. I say "only tree", it's probably the only one - I don't think every inch of the huge seacliffs on that island will have been checked! #Mingulay #Hebrides #Scoland #PlantADay #Botany #Nature #Plant #Wildflower

A carpet of Sea Pink (Armeria maritima) on the awesone island of Mingulay in the outer Hebrides. The yellow stuff covering the rocks is a lichen, likely Xanthoria sp.

Sounds like a dream job.

After13 years Jonathan Grant retires as the caretaker of Mingulay, Pabbay and Berneray, three uninhabited islands south of Barra managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
He camps out for weeks at a time while carrying out monitoring of the island habitats.
