"#FossilFuel extraction is a known source of #methane leaks, releasing large amounts of this potent #GreenhouseGas into the atmosphere. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency appears to be drastically underreporting emissions from the nation’s largest oil-producing region.

"Nearly half of U.S. oil comes from the Permian Basin in West #Texas and southeastern #NewMexico. The region generates more than $100 billion annually for the U.S. economy, and apparently, a whole lot of methane, too. A recent report from #MethaneSAT—a methane-sensing satellite that observed Earth from March 2024 to June 2025—found emissions from the Permian Basin to be nearly four times higher than the EPA’s official estimates."

"MethaneSAT, an $88 million satellite backed by Jeff Bezos..."

That's the first time I've heard his name mentioned in connection with the venture. Why are NZ taxpayers subsidising Bezos?

Meanwhile Luxon blames Labour and Judith Collins is hiding in a cupboard. That's leadership for you.

Der #Methan-Satellit #MethaneSAT ist nach nur 15 Monaten Betrieb überraschend ausgefallen.

Der speziell für die Erkennung kleinster #Methanlecks entwickelte Satellit hatte ohne Vorwarnung den Kontakt verloren und ist laut Betreiber wohl nicht mehr zu retten.

Die Mission galt als wichtiges Werkzeug im Kampf gegen den #Klimawandel. Ein vergleichbares Nachfolgeprojekt ist bisher nicht angekündigt.

Das hat die gemeinnützige Umweltorganisation #EDF (Environmental Defense Fund) jetzt mitgeteilt, der Kontakt zu dem #Satelliten namens #MethaneSAT ist demnach bereits am 20. Juni abgebrochen.
