Seems https://stract.com ils no longer operational, and the developper is no working on the project any longer...
That's a pity 😥 , I liked the ideas behind this search engine, although the index was never big enough to give really relevant results.

#marginaliasearch is an alternative, it seems.

I'm not sure what it takes to run a web crawler... Or how big the index becomes..
#yacy has a decentralized approach, not sure it works

Seadra Pokémon Cosplay Photography

I am writing an article about Marginalia Search. I wanted to check something on the search results page. Since Marginalia is good at turning up small web and vintage websites and articles, I decided to search for an old school unsung Pokémon. After thinking for about 15 seconds, I settled on Seadra. Seadra seems like a good choice for an obscure generation one Pokémon. It was a standard water-type Pokémon and final-stage evolution in generation one. It received a new evolution in […]

Fun (?) fact: I'm increasingly turning to #MarginaliaSearch whenever I need to look stuff up.

Previously I pegged it as a search engine that is a cool idea but didn't index enough web to be useful.

But Marginalia is one of the only search engines that regularly surfaces up pre-2022 content.

So it's one of the only search engines now where I can reliably find information that isn't slop.

@StartpageSearch @cmccullough Depending on the subject, I like #marginaliasearch (marginalia-search.com), which is truly AI-free and functions as a search engine should. The database is rather limited since this is a one man's work, but totally worth a try especially with niche topics. I've found true gems in personal home pages that would otherwise be buried in a pile of SEO-optimized crap by bigger engines. The #marginalia project is an ode to the old web.
