Newsletter Leaf Journal CCXXXII 〜 Return of the BLOB

Returning fron a one-week hiatus (and leading into another), Newsletter Leaf Journal 232 covers the newest NLJ posts from the previous two weeks, 21 links from around the web, and some fun facts about the most popular NLJ articles going back to 2021.

I took these two photos at 7:34 and 7:36 PM on May 4, 2025 from the Fruit Street Sitting Area in Brooklyn Heights (NYC). This is between the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and the long hill leading down to DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park. As you can see, it was very foggy that evening and the fog obscured the Manhattan Skyline. In the bottom-right corner of the second photo you can see a wooden bridge which leads down to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

I saw a discarded dry Christmas Tree on a Williamsburg, Brooklyn (NYC) sidewalk. You may be wondering why I stopped to take a photo. Reason: The day was May 4, 2025.

Williamsburg Christmas Tree in May 2025

I came across a very dry Christmas tree in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn tree pit on a rainy afternoon on May 4, 2025. Who waits until May to discard a Christmas tree?

I first saw a BLOB DYLAN tag in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in January 2021. That launched me on a journey toward becoming one of the internet's leading BLOB DYLAN scholars (or so I tell myself). Despite my research on the matter of BLOB, I never saw a BLOB DYLAN tag in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which is one of his stomping grounds (or so I hear). However, that all changed on the afternoon of May 4, 2025. I present to you a BLOB DYLAN tag seen on Roebling Street.

(Note: There are a few other BLOB DYLAN photos in my Pixelfed collection if you scroll for them.)

BLOB DYLAN Seen in Williamsburg (May 2025)

I had written several articles about BLOB DYLAN graffiti after seeing a tag in Bushwick. On May 2025, I finally happened across a BLOB tag in Williamsburg.

I delete many spam comments left in our Guestbook. Most are not worth sharing, but every now and then I see one that catches my attention. One example is a spam comment that has now been left for moderation for posting in our Guestbook twice. The comment is posted by user killer for hire and it advertises a service which “lets you find experts for occasionally dangerous tasks.” It states that “contractors are qualified in managing complex jobs” before a URL, which includes the words hitman, assassin, and killer. “This service ensures safe interactions between requestors and specialists.” What in the world? I would have posted the screenshot but I would rather not indirectly advertise the actual URL. I did not click the URL, but there is a non-zero chance it leads to a casino or marijuana site. Weird stuff.

[Note] “killer for hire” Leaves Two Spam Comments

A user named “killer for hire” left a somewhat troubling advertising spam comment in my WordPress website’s comment guestbook.

Leafing, as the Trees Leaf in May

Concluding the first month of The New Leaf Journal magazine by examining the verb definition of “leaf,” “as, the trees leaf in May.”

The New Leaf Journal

After the 2025 Playoff field was finalized, I wrote a follow-up post highlighting how SRS can differ from win-loss record. The 37-45 Miami Heat made the 2025 Playoffs (and were unsurprisingly sent home quickly). One would think a 37-45 team would have qualified for my worst playoff team survey... but the Heat actually had a positive SRS and Net Rating. Go figure. I examined whether they had the worst record of a positive SRS/Net playoff team (spoiler: they did).

“Best” NBA Playoff Teams With Losing Records

The Miami Heat made the NBA Playoffs with a 37-45 record but positive SRS and Net Rating. I go back to 1983-84 to look at every NBA playoff team with a losing record and positive SRS.
