Le chagrin et la pitié [The Sorrow and the Pity] (Marcel Ophüls, 1969)
Ophüls documents the people of Clermont-Ferrand as the microcosm of Vichy France, part of Europe's only country that happily collaborated with its occupier, Nazi Germany. What were their justifications, their excuses, their motivations? Was it survival, habit, greed? Comfort, conformity, obedience, fear?

And what's yours?

Marcel Ophuls, one of the greatest documentarians of his era, died on Saturday at age 97. The son of famed director Max Opuls, he was born in Germany, but fled to France to escape the Nazis and ended up in Hollywood. His 1969 film, "The Sorrow and the Pity," explored the moral ambiguity of French people under German occupation in WWII, and was banned from French television for more than a decade because, TV executives said, it "destroyed the myths the French still need." He won an Oscar for “Hôtel Terminus,” his 1988 portrait of Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie. Here's more from PBS.
