Just making sure you know, apropos of #Lays' 'made in Canada' ad, it's not about where shit is made, it's about where the money ends up.

I wonder how well that ad is being received in the States. Ha.

Last time I was in a supermarket, they played the Canadian national anthem twice, then announced their "patriotic" signage.

"This created a product advertisement that is misleading to consumers regarding the origin of the product." #MapleWashing

Looking to 'Buy Canadian' at the grocery store? Beware of maple-washing: CBC’s Marketplace Cheat Sheet | CBC News

"Maple Washing" is basically companies mislablelling their product as "canadian" even if they're not, or only partially. #maplewashing

In this video, they found many confusing products.

One of them was labeled as:
- Canadian company since 1957
- Prepared in Canada
But was ultimately a product of the USA. You had to flip it over and read the small prints.

Furthermore, they found Australian products with VERY clear labels: indicating even the % of ingredients coming from #australia. I think that would be great for #canada to have something like that.

For now, if you want to buy canadian, the safest label to find is "Product of Canada".

Think you're buying Canadian? That grocery item may actually be from the U.S. | CBC News

The push to buy Canadian is loud and clear, but are those local-looking products the real deal? CBC Marketplace exposes how some popular foods that seem Canadian are actually made in the U.S. Experts say some patriotic packaging may confuse shoppers, a practice called "maple washing."

This is awesome. Can it be used to describe people, too? For example, Mark Carney is a maplewasher, or Mark Carney maplewashed himself to get elected.

"Canada’s 2025 word of the year is “maplewash,” defined as the deceptive practice of making things appear more Canadian than they actually are."
