#MyFirstDistro was #Mandriva. This was in Christmas 2006 or 2007 when I was handed my first laptop. Although Mandriva's default desktop environment was KDE, I was using GNOME since I liked how it worked. I tried Ubuntu for half a day before switching to Mandriva.
The author Steven Brust who wrote the Firefly novel "My Own Kind of Freedom" mentioned using its predecessor, Mandrake, in his free book:
For people who care about such things, the book was written in emacs on a box running Mandrake Linux, then I used OpenOffice to format it for printing. The final layout for online publication was created with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. People who care about such things need to get a life.
Being a big fan of Firefly at the time I thought it was pretty cool. So there began my journey in FOSS. I have Mandriva's successor, Mageia w/ KDE, on a USB I update every now and then.
And PS Mr. Brust I have a life!!
