Magic Tuber Stringband | the PROPAGANDA site
Magic Tuber Stringband is a band that blends their avant-garde explorations seamlessly into the traditional Appalachian folk sound. They were the duo of Courtney Werner (fiddle) and Evan Morgan (guitar) for the longest time up until 2026's Heavy Water, where they added Michael DeVito (bass, banjo) to the line-up. On the traditional end, they create straight-up, salt-of-the-earth folk pieces that may occasionally be embellished by a discordant fiddle playing underneath. On the experimental end, the band takes a direction towards a drone-based style that leans into dissonance to some extent, while strictly preserving the fundamental shape of traditional folk music. All of this makes for a bit of stylistic tension in their music and a unique listening experience.
