Today’s small moment.

This photograph marks the last time Dad and I crossed into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula together, driving north while my brother was in the hospital. We didn’t know then that he would die a couple of weeks later, or that this trip would later mark the point between life before my brother’s death and everything that came shortly thereafter.

We were together, sharing the same road and the same concern. I don’t usually have the chance to slow down like this, but traffic coming off the Mackinac Bridge that day gave me the pause I needed to notice it—and to take the photo.

Today’s small moment - driving across the Mackinac Bridge in early January a couple years ago. Even with voice control, I didn’t get many photos as it required more concentration as the bridge deck was slick and snow covered. Winds were brisk. The view was incredible. It’s occurred to me that I wouldn’t mind being an escort driver for folks who don’t like driving across the bridge.

Today's small moment - When driving over the Mackinac Bridge, I love how the second tower appears perfectly framed within the first.

On a cloudy day like this, it’s almost hard to believe we’re crossing a body of water at all—it feels higher than it is, with nothing but clouds and a faint glimpse of the horizon in view.

I’ll never get tired of crossing the Mackinac Bridge, whether I’m heading north to the Upper Peninsula or south to the Lower Peninsula.

Today's Small Moment - looking back on this day in 2023 when I was driving from Virginia to Michigan to bring dad to live with us. As always, I have to stop at one (or both) of the parks on either end of the Bridge. This shot is from the Colonial Michilimackinac Historic State Park in Mackinaw City in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

With the snow on the shoreline and the view through the trees, this is one of my favorite views of the Mighty Mac.

Whenever I am driving to or from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, it’s mandatory for me to go to one (sometimes both!) of the bridge view parks. On our way south today, I stopped at the park near Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in the Lower Peninsula.

To get past the hurt and trauma of the day, I’m trying to post something every day that makes me smile or laugh. I’m currently in the middle of a serious family medical emergency that has taken me back to my home state of Michigan. I’m looking for any and all things, big or small, that will take my mind off the life and death circumstances here.

I like to fall back to familiar views and here is today’s piece - a view of the Mackinac Bridge from Bridge View Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A lake freighter had just passed under the bridge when we arrived.
