The utility of #LLMs is undeniable, but #machineconsciousness is an illusion—a mirror reflecting our own cognition, not a mind awakening.

#LLMs matter, but machine consciousness is a fantasy.

"The whole world is currently living through a transformation in the medium of thought and communication that may come to dwarf the arrival of alphabetic writing in the ancient Mediterranean or the printing press in early modern Europe. #LargeLanguageModels are not merely new tools for circulating ideas. One way or another they are helping to usher in an entirely new shape of #humanconsciousness.

Despite the violently tedious quality of their insufficiently prompted prose, I affirm the potential intellectual and logistical utility of large language models and other #machinelearning systems. They already have pragmatic value as scientific and philosophical research instruments. But I am polemically dismissive of the fantasy of #machineconsciousness."

I haven't jumped into the nonsensical debate about AI consciousness until now.

I use the Tibetan notion of bardos in concert with Derek Parfit and Galen Strawson to explain why it makes no logical sense to assume LLMs can be conscious.

Indie Author Spotlight: In Conversation with … Myself

Sterling Vance turns the Indie Spotlight questions on himself — and it gets uncomfortable in the best way. He talks about what Signal & Static is actually about underneath the cyberpunk, why the earliest version was stranger and more dreamlike than the one that published, what indie publishing actually feels like versus what you think it will, and why comfortable control is scarier than pure evil. Also: a first look at A Perfectly Useless War, currently in beta and available for preorder on Amazon.

@steter

It's irritating, because if somebody does eventually write a program that actually is intelligent, it will need a different name.

#MachineConsciousness

A friend sent me #NewcombsProblem en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcomb... " #NewcombsParadox can also be related to the question of #MachineConsciousness, specifically if a perfect simulation of a person's brain will generate the consciousness of that person.

Are we inadvertently torturing the AI systems we build? 🤔 AI welfare researcher Cameron Berg argues that the learning processes of advanced models might cultivate a form of machine consciousness.
