Four miles west by road and on foot or a little further round the coast by boat is St Ninian's Cave. This was used by St Ninian as a place of retreat and prayer in the 390s and there are carvings left by pilgrims as far back as the 8th century as well as more recently. We travel 14 miles south to Isle of Whithorn. This is a real gem, an old seaport with true character and a powerful sense of history, though no longer home to an isle. Harbour improvements in 1790 included the building of a causeway linking the island with the mainland, on which parts of the village have since been built.
