This previously unexplored aspect of #MPXV was discovered by a research team from the #IVI, #unibern, #CHUV and the #BundeslaborSpiez.

Between January and August 2024, mpox cases have been reported in nearly all provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Monkeypox virus genome sequences were obtained from 11 mpox cases’ samples, collected in July–August 2024 in several health zones of Kinshasa. Characterisation of the sequences showed subclades Ia and Ib co-circulating in the Limete health zone, while phylogenetic analyses suggested multiple introductions of the two subclades in Kinshasa. This illustrates the growing complexity of Clade I mpox outbreaks in DRC.

The clade Ib #MPXV #outbreak, which began in September 2023 in #DRC, is having an increasing number of cases in country & also expanding to neighbouring countries. #Burundi, #Kenya, #Rwanda and #Uganda have each reported their first mpox cases.

In late July 24, #Burundi, #Rwanda, & #Uganda reported confirmed cases of mpox, with some cases having linkages to DRC. Rwanda & Uganda have confirmed these cases are due to clade I MPXV; in Burundi, clade-specific testing is underway, but cases are presumed to be clade I due to DRC’s proximity. Mpox is not known to be endemic in these countries.
