Africa CDC and WHO update mpox strategy as outbreaks persist

The Africa CDC and WHO have revised their Continental Response Plan for the ongoing mpox outbreaks, focusing on outbreak control and vaccination expansion. The updated strategy aims for a sustainable response while addressing challenges such as local transmission and funding gaps.

«Pero es importante destacar, como hemos mencionado repetidamente, la baja cobertura de pruebas, que ronda el 21 %. Esto significa que de cada 10 casos sospechosos, sólo dos se someterán a una prueba. Por lo tanto, lo que comunicamos en términos de casos confirmados es sólo una pequeña parte», matizó Boum.

An animal source of mpox emerges — and it’s a squirrel

Researchers solve the mystery of a disease outbreak through long-term surveillance of wildlife in Africa.

For so many people, it's hard to fathom how deadly pathogens can cross from animal hosts to human hosts. I think it's important to point out cases of #zoonosis where sturdy work has been done to show potential links from a likely reservoir. This is even more important since our last pandemic. If the wider public saw more examples of zoonoses, then perhaps this major source of emerging human pathogens would not continue to be enigmatic to the lay public.

The study carried out by Carme Riutord-Fe and Jasmin Schlotterbeck and led by Fabian Leendertz collected samples from a group of mangabeys before, during and after a #Mpox outbreak. Their research suggests the virus was transmitted to the primates by eating Mpox-infected squirrels.

#Mpox viruses can infect various species, but their reservoir in the wild was unknown. A preprint by HIOH researchers, Ivorian partners, and the Taï Chimpanzee Project now identified the fire-footed rope squirrel as a potential reservoir.
