The famous runway at Lukla in Nepal - the ‘gateway to Everest’. The sloping runway helps aircraft to accelerate faster when leaving (so they don’t t just roll off the end) and decelerate faster when arriving (so they don’t hit the rock wall at the other end!).

"In the mountainous country of Nepal, the flag carrying airline, Nepal Airlines (previously Royal Nepal Airlines), traverses the country, landing and taking off on smalls airstrips. In the 1970s, the airline acquired a small fleet of STOL (short takeoff and landing) de Havilland Twin Otters to take on their challenging domestic routes. Elevations vary drastically in Nepal - even just across an airstrip. Twenty miles south of Mount Everest's peak, the Tenzing-HIllary Airport (also known as Lukla) has different elevations at the bottom and top of the landing strip, with a nearly 12 degree slope! Lukla is a remarkable place to visit, like a theme park for trekkers. The streets are filled with coffee shops and cheap puffy jackets.

Things are changing though. That remarkable runway is still doing a tonne of traffic but the helicopters are taking over. Lots of people want to see Everest, but not everyone wants to trek there. I'm very lucky to have shared this journey with a group of dangerous adventurous souls, and a handful of yaks.
