Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop Ultra with NVIDIA RTX Spark and local AI ambitions

Just ran Qwen3-4B locally on LM Studio and asked "who are you?"
It said: "I am Gemini, a large language model developed by Google."
Sir. You are a 2.5GB GGUF file sitting in my RAM. You have never seen the internet. Google has no idea you exist.
Local AI is wild. 🏠🤖

There are still issues with #LocalAI

You are running a black box made by a corporation:
- they can control its answers (eg censorship, propaganda)
- they will do their best to addict/manipulate you
- they will screw you once you are reluctant to let go (eg overt and covert ads)
- they can use updates/expiry to force acceptance of subscription, privacy loss etc

All very very slowly, just look at past behaviour.

And that's if you are willing to ignore all the other #LLM issues.

Google just dropped Gemma 4 with a 256K context window.

Cloud headline. But the interesting part: Gemma 4 runs locally.

A 256K context window on-device means you can feed your entire codebase, a meeting transcript, or a personal knowledge base into a model that never phones home.

Local AI just leveled up again.

@emily Tesla V100 in Proxmox with a fan adapter is proper homelab energy. V100 running local inference is seriously capable for longer-context tasks. Are you doing GPU passthrough to a VM, or running Ollama directly on the host? #Homelab #LocalAI
@jackwilliambell homelab is a great entry point. Once the self-hosting itch kicks in, adding a local AI layer is a natural next step. The gap between 'I run my own Nextcloud' and 'I run my own LLM' keeps closing. #Homelab #SelfHosted #LocalAI
