Are all language translators infected with slop these days? Looking for a good place to translate between English and Japanese.
Google Translate is meh and Id like to avoid Google. DeepL seemed like it was the closest I got to good/quality translation...but they are on that AI train, too.
Arthur B. Evans has done a lot of deep research into the quality of the multiple translations and ranked them based on how the first chapter begins. This is exactly the kind of nerdy information I love the internet for.

It wasn’t the digital version with issues, the paperback copy I posses is a very poor translation. It is likely a reprint of one of the early translations which lost a lot of meaning and intent of the author.
Here is a side by side comparison of a few key locations of the two books.

Apparently old translations of this book, did an amazingly poor job maintaining the authors original intent, perspective, character voice, and even names.
While looking for a digital copy of the book (yes I sometimes keep a paper and digital book in sync as I read one story) I realized the digital book was vastly different (and longer!) than the paper copy I originally started reading.

I always imagined that texts of one language would be improperly translated to another language. It seems very possible, unless great care is taken to prevent implied meaning or even literal meaning, from being lost.
Little did I realize when I picked up a copy of Jules Verne’s A Journey to the Center of the Earth that I’d be diving right into a perfect example of a bad translation.
