Are all language translators infected with slop these days? Looking for a good place to translate between English and Japanese.

Google Translate is meh and Id like to avoid Google. DeepL seemed like it was the closest I got to good/quality translation...but they are on that AI train, too.

@Catwoman69y2k By definition, any automatic translation system is based on LLMs. The only non-LLM option is a real person.

@Catwoman69y2k

if you want to look for auto-translators that dont use neuronets, they are usually called "rule-based"

@Catwoman69y2k FWIW, I’ve found Kagi to be really good for translation. They give you their translation, and then some context about how they interpreted it (things that influenced word choices, like slang use, or formality). Then they give you 4 alternate interpretations that all emphasize different things (like, “this variation assumes that the speaker is a woman”, or “this keeps the colloquial tone of the original”, etc).

Maybe that would be useful for you? 🙂

@MythingPerson See, to some extent, DeepL did this. I found it the most helpful with translating Japanese to English because sometimes some things are hard to translate.

Than DeepL drank the AI Kool-Aid and so now I cant trust it. :/
