It snuck up on me this year, but the Oakland OCD Walk is tomorrow! I had a lot of fun coming up with names this year, but went with "Wyatt ERPs Dusty Riders" because bad puns are the best puns.

I guess we are supposed to put more narrative with these...

For that last 2 years, basically the 2 years since I started transition, I have been living right next to #LakeMerrit in downtown #Oakland. The lake draws lots of the community: people exercising, walking dogs, selling drugs, playing drums, picnicking, shooting at each other... The lake is actually part of the Oakland/Alameda estuary system. It's brackish and connected to the Pacific Ocean through the San Francisco Bay. It ends up being a home for small fish, clams, and muscles. That attracts lots of different waterbirds. Everyday walking my dogs I see egrets, herons, pelicans all hunting for their next meal, right in the middle of all the urban chaos.

"Word got out quickly, he said, after one of the institute’s board members reported seeing another one of the large fish still alive and leaping out of the water, and the citizen science app iNaturalist received several other reports.

(. . .)

'For me, it’s a moment of awe to see these fish in the center of a downtown urban area,' Noonan said. 'We don’t know where they’re coming from — probably a hatchery — but how do they cue in on Lake Merritt?'

(. . .)

In recent years, CDFW has been releasing millions of hatchery-raised Chinook salmon near the Golden Gate Bridge. While most of them swim toward the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and to the Central Valley hatcheries they were born in, Noonan said, the fish that aren’t caught in the ocean come back without a natal stream to spawn in and find flowing streams nearby by scent, explained Eric Ettlinger, an aquatic ecologist for Marin Water. That includes the streams entering Lake Merritt; Bay Nature previously reported the salmon had also turned up in Alameda Creek, the Guadalupe River, and Los Gatos Creek in the South Bay."
