In recent years, CDFW has been releasing millions of hatchery-raised Chinook salmon near the Golden Gate Bridge. While most of them swim toward the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and to the Central Valley hatcheries they were born in, Noonan said, the fish that aren’t caught in the ocean come back without a natal stream to spawn in and find flowing streams nearby by scent, explained Eric Ettlinger, an aquatic ecologist for Marin Water. That includes the streams entering Lake Merritt; Bay Nature previously reported the salmon had also turned up in Alameda Creek, the Guadalupe River, and Los Gatos Creek in the South Bay."
