A year ago the Massachucetts #SupremeCourt ruled youths could not be given life sentences. Since then Massachusetts Parole Board has retroactively released 39 #LWOP murder convicts who were initially sentenced to life without parole as "emerging adults".

Despite some public outcry, judicial resentencing has been mandated in the state for certain young offenders previously given Life Without #Parole. Critics and victims family advocates are outraged that criminals like Roger Francis, who at age 20 killed a 15 year old, James Parker , then a teen who helped kill a Dartmouth professor, and Allen Alston, who ruthlessly killed a #taxicab driver at 19 are all being freed.

I just got a letter from Willie, and he hasn't mentioned anything about correspondence needing to be sent to Texas to be scanned.

One of the team members sent me this:
https://doc.alabama.gov/docs/ICMail-Inmate.pdf

In addition Willie refereed to a letter which I sent last month. So they must still be letting mail through. I've actually sent three letters after the cutoff date, as I didn't know about it.

Maybe not all of the prisons are doing this yet?

He asked that I send him a book of stamps, a common request, which I assume I wouldn't be able to do when sending letters to get scanned.

Also unclear if Willie has access to these tablets, to get the scanned mail. If he does, does he understand how to use them. And if those would be free.

If you have already sent a card, and / money, to Willie thanks so much. 👏

If not there is plenty of time left before the end of the month. ⏱️

ANY card is a great card. 🃏 Or even a short note saying you heard about his birthday on the Internet and wish him the best.

Thanks.

Parole Board Questions Dying Prisoner On 30-Year-Old Murder, Not His Health

> “My question is, *[If] you go back out, how will you handle these situations?*” Kelcourse pressed.

> “I’m dying now, they’re trying to kill me now, so I come back [to prison], I’m dead,” Ware answered in his defense.

Parole Board Questions Dying Prisoner On 30-Year-Old Murder, Not His Health

For James Ware, an extremely ill Department of Correction prisoner, a final chance at release after medical parole denial

Willie was sentenced to life without parole for two convictions of receiving stolen property, and a mugging.  He’s been in jail for 43 years, and will most like die in jail.

So send the man a birthday card, so he knows that not everyone has forgotten about him.

It's Willie's birthday this month. We have a pretty graphics deck, if that's what you are into.

In addition to sending a card, suggested donation amounts are:

$19.84 for the year he was imprisoned

$43 for the number of years he's been imprisoned

$68 as that's how old he will be

Thanks.

Will The Massachusetts Governor Help The Overburdened Parole Board?

The Mass Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) rendered that ruling in January 2024, providing those 18 to 20 years of age at the time of their crime—and previously doomed to serve life without parole (LWOP)—with protections against a mandatory death-in-prison sentence. That fostered an opportunity for release on parole, a development stemming from a 2013 ruling that “mandatory life without parole for those under the age of eighteen at the time of their crimes violates the prohibition in the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution on ‘cruel and unusual punishment.’”
