I was making a list earlier this morning with trans themed movies I want to see. Representation is extremely important and I'm just trying to see what's out there. I've seen Min Pappa Marianne" (English title: My Father Marianne) where
@rolfofficialpage is playing
@annchristineruuth and tells her story and I loved it so I highly recommend seeing it.
But what other movies are out there? I found a bunch that I'm going to see eventually but one thing struck me: they almost always have the same concept. Guy meets crossdresser/trans woman/drag queen, falls in love against his will and things gets complicated.
While this is an important subject to cover it also paints a pretty one-sided view of what trans is, what we're like and who we are. It's pretty much always male-to-female characters who are attracted to men and hardly ever trans women and crossdressers who are attracted to women and I don't think I've ever heard of a movie about trans men. We hardly speak about trans men at all. Not in movies, tv-series, games or anywhere. And I have to admit, I don't do it either but that's mostly because I don't know anything about what it's like to be a trans man but I'd love to have a chat with one some day and ask all those stupid questions so that I can learn something. But I digress now.
"Min Pappa Marianne" doesn't fall into this stereotype so it stands out a little which is nice but I want more variation of trans themed movies. I'd like to have every wonderful little facet of the trans spectrum covered and show the world that we're a pretty diverse group of people and shouldn't be stereotyped into this one-sided thinking about us.
Now, I might be wrong, there may be tons of movies or there that are trans themed and show a wider variety of trans identities and in that case I take it all back but I just haven't come across them yet. Most movies I see are themed this way and I wish we could have more variation in the future
Take care out there
