Dreizehenmöwen sind faszinierende Seevögel, die in Island oft in großen Gruppen zu beobachten sind. Besonders an Sandbänken und Klippen versammeln sie sich in geselligen Kolonien – Dutzende oder sogar Hunderte der eleganten Vögel tummeln sich dort. Ob sie über dem Wasser kreisen oder gemeinsam auf Felsen und Sandbänken rasten, an der Küste begegne ich ihnen fast immer.

Dreizehenmöwen nisten in großen Kolonien an den Felsvorsprüngen der Látrabjarg-Klippe. Beim Starten nutzen sie die aufsteigende Luft um Energie zu sparen. Die Vögel sind an die exponierte Lage und die starken Winde gut angepasst. Ihre Nester bestehen meist aus Gras und Seetang.
