#CommunityRadio is back in #StLouis! Internet-only for now, Community Radio St. Louis is broadcasting 24/7 at crstl.fm.

The folks from the former #KDHX did not let the selfishness and greed of the Executive Director and the incompetence of the Board stop them. When the bankruptcy judge allowed a Christian radio station to purchase the old 88.1 frequency (to essentially mothball it), along with some new folks and a lot community support, put together a new place for music lovers to share and learn about all kinds of music and for #StL folks to get info about local events and concerns.

In addition to the livestream, there are playlights, archived shows, and coming soon, a concert calendar. Give it listen!

Musical genres featured include #punk #folkmusic #bluegrass #soul #R&B #blues #jazz #latin #Afropop #HipHop and #Reggae.

16 critics sue KDHX seeking to oust board of directors

KDHX critics are suing to remove seven of eight members of the community radio station’s board of directors. It’s the latest dispute in a conflict that has reshaped the station’s on-air schedule and its place in the St. Louis music community.

Community radio station #KDHX hasn’t paid its staff since late April, according to a source close to the situation, and it’s not clear when the station will be able to do so again.

KDHX staffers go unpaid for months

The station’s most recent tax returns showed a 38 percent drop in revenue from 2018 to 2023, amid a series of controversies, including the firing of nearly a dozen DJs.

The Love of KDHX
Musicians Call For New Leadership at KDHX

St. Louis has a storied history of rich and varied music. But the story of our music scene is also very much in the here and now – one can go out any night and experience a staggering variety of sounds: hip-hop, r&b, country, blues, rock, folk, reggae, electronic, bluegrass, jazz, and on and on and on. For over 36 years, KDHX has helped make this possible. It has championed and showcased independent voices and independent music – our voices and our music. In a market dominated by corporate commercial radio, KDHX has been our greatest ally. Unfortunately, this great community radio station is now run by an executive director and a board who feel little obligation to serve the community. This crisis didn’t happen overnight. In 2019, KDHX management fired and/or forced out many staff members and volunteers of color. The executive director faced credible accusations of racism and harassment. Those painful events weigh heavily on the current crisis. Then in 2023, Kelly Wells and Gary Pierson’s mass firing of volunteer DJs, with dozens more resigning in solidarity, sparked a mass outcry that has fallen on deaf ears. Management has doubled down on a "bold new vision” that is neither bold nor new. It is heartless and misguided, and it leaves thousands of listeners out in the cold. Over the past year, KDHX’s Nielsen ratings have cratered, over a third of the station’s donors have stopped donating, and just weeks ago over 160 local businesses issued a statement decrying management’s failures. Still that management refuses to listen or change course. We, the musicians of St. Louis (and beyond), say enough is enough. We have been among the hardest hit by these reckless actions. For many of us, KDHX was the first station to ever play us on the radio. It took a DJ who cared enough about the community and our music to make that happen. KDHX was the only station to invite us on air and work with us to grow the music scene. But so much of this is gone now, resulting in scores of missed opportunities for the city. While many DJs still support our music, many of our greatest champions have been forced out; the special bond between KDHX and the musical community has been shattered. Management claims they are merely following their strategic plan and that its critics oppose change and reject diversity. This is false. Nowhere in that plan can one find justification let alone directive to drive out the volunteers who literally helped build KDHX. There is nothing strategic about incinerating decades of institutional knowledge and alienating the community. All KDHX DJs played the music of St. Louis artists and spoke of the history behind the music. There were always new musicians of all genres recording new music, and you could count on hearing it on KDHX. When traveling bands came through St. Louis, KDHX DJs nurtured relationships between those musicians and St Louis musicians. Those roots were strong after 36 years and on solid ground. Now much of those roots are gone. The greatness that came with the DJs who showed up week after week for decades to bring programs they constructed from their deep knowledge of music, along with their hearts and souls, is much less a part of KDHX now. So many of those DJs have been fired, suspended, or quit in solidarity because of the behavior of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The trust of 36 years is gone. Kelly Wells and Gary Pierson have shut down communication, and truth has been hidden with false innuendo. Amidst this turmoil, new DJs have filled spaces left by those unjustly dismissed, highlighting this leadership's calculated divisiveness. It's disheartening that their arrival, which should be a cause for celebration, is mired in controversy. And it's bitterly ironic that the DJs who drew attention to widely acknowledged issues continue to be scapegoated. And yet we remain optimistic. We see a future where KDHX thrives on genuine inclusivity and creativity, truly reflecting our diverse community, without cutting out its most valued contributors or destroying its brand. Together, we believe we can make KDHX a place where music and community converge beautifully. Diversity, equity and inclusion need not be a zero sum game. As musicians and artists, we love KDHX. That is why we are calling for change. It is time for new leadership, leadership that is truly connected to the community, that listens to the community, and that inspires the trust of the community. It is time to return the exiled DJs to the air. Here's to a new chapter for KDHX, shaped by all of us dedicated to its resurgence.
