I just published a video of the new "end to end encryption" protocol for ActivityPub in #Emissary. The UX is rougher than I'd like, but you can see the client app is coming along nicely.
Today, it sends and receives messages using MLS, a widely used industry standard and successor to the Signal protocol.
By June 2026, it should be ready for you.
For more details on the project and my progress, see: https://emissary.dev/e2ee

And.. you probably know, but just in case:
We have a solid spec for E2EE on the Fediverse now (https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-e2ee/mls) with #Emissary and #Bonfire launching later this year.
As you'd expect with end-to-end-encryption, *most* of the work is on the browser/client. The AP server changes are minimal: a new KeyPackage object to store, a new collection, & other small stuff.
When we have working JS code, it'll be AGPL, and you could use it as a baseline for Mastodon 😎

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could send encrypted DM’s on the Fediverse BEFORE you could do it in Bluesky? #JustBetweenUs
I've just sent the first end-to-end-encrypted #MLS messages from one #Emissary instance to another.
News from around the USA really has me down, so it's important to celebrate the little wins 🎉
And, there's still so much to do. But with equal quantities of luck and caffeine, I can screencast some early prototypes for you before too long.
I believe #E2EE is important for the #Fediverse because it will give us more ways to use this network, and expand what people can do here.
Thank you! Data Portability always had to get out the door this year, and the E2EE project was the final push to get it done now. I neeeeded this off the kanban board so I can focus exclusively on encryption through February. #JustBetweenUs
Soooo... #JustBetweenUs There's already some big stuff in the works for 2026:
The Social Web Foundation (@swf) has kicked off a project to bring real end-to-end encryption to the Fediverse. It's a big undertaking, with real financial backing from the @sovtechfund
Check out the announcement: https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/12/19/implementing-encrypted-messaging-over-activitypub/
And, I'm very excited that #Emissary is one of the projects selected to participate in the work alongside the @bonfire team.

Big news for the #Fediverse! End-to-end encryption is coming to #ActivityPub.
@swf with support from @sovtechfund is coordinating two interoperable implementations.
Bonfire is proud to be one of these first two projects, alongside #Emissary by @benpate
We think #E2EE should simply be the default for any private communications, and we’re especially thrilled to bring private, trusted collaboration to the fediverse.
Implementing Encrypted Messaging over ActivityPub
One of the project areas of the Social Web Foundation for the last year has been end-to-end encrypted messaging. ActivityPub, the standard protocol that powers the Social Web, has privacy controls, but they do not protect the content of messages from server operators. Encrypted messaging has become a common feature on many social networks since ActivityPub was created, and its lack has inhibited Social Web adoption and public trust in the network. ActivityPub is extensible, though. As part […]https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/12/19/implementing-encrypted-messaging-over-activitypub/
