Howdy! I'm the nerd who's building #Emissary - an ActivityPub server for building custom social applications on the Fediverse.

My first app on this platform is a music sharing server for indie bands, called #Bandwagon. And now I'm also working on #Atlas, a social mapping server for adding Federated annotations to places in the real world.

If you'd like to talk about any of my projects, feel free to DM me here, or on Signal (@benpate.5280)

Feature Highlight for v4.12.0 — Activity Intents

A new feature silently dropped in v4.12.0. NodeBB now supports Activity Intents!

Huh? What's an Activity Intent?

It is a proposal by @[email protected] that aims to "extend the capabilities of an ActivityPub server beyond a user's outbox, and enable direct interactions with content on the wider social web."

In other words, it allows you to more seamlessly use your fediverse account on other sites without having to register a new account just to contribute.

In even simpler words, it means you can go to other forums and interact with content without needing to register a new account.

It directly tackles one of the fediverse "hard problems" I talked about last year — account fragmentation. You won't need additional accounts just to use other sites, your identity stays whole

Let's learn more about how that works![...]

"You make it work on your terms, at your own pace. It’s more than what most do in their adult age. At least you're fucking doing it.

I’m telling you this as a guy who has never paid his bills off gigs and record sales alone.

I make fucking noise music and walls of ambient textures, dude, I don’t expect to receive a big advance from Atlantic or Sony to crank out my algorithmically generated pulsating meter nowness anytime soon."

Lifers, Dayjobbers, and the Independently Wealthy: A Letter to a Former Student

Written by Max Alper Last year, a private student of mine had gotten in touch with me via email at around 3 AM. I had known this student for years prior, as they were in one of the earliest college courses I ever taught when they were an undergraduate at

Well I have finally gotten around to setting up a mirlo account today 🥳

I've been meaning to do this for ages and finally found the time. If bandcamp isn't your thing, you can now get both of my EPs (Facets and Descends) on mirlo!

Happy listening!

A reminder to #ActivityPub developers and advocates: applications for the NLNet Open Social Fund close on June 1st (#BrookeVibberDay) at noon CEST. You should apply; you are doing important work and we need you to keep doing it.

Although I don't think I'll have time to implement this in full (yet), faircamp 2.0 now has a platform integration setting¹ (scary term, I know :D) for opting-in to content embeds (i.e. sharing a faircamp link on platforms and getting an embedded audio player into people's timelines automagically). It's a start .. :)

I took a few days off to recharge and do the mid-term reporting for my project funding (done \o/), and am now getting my momentum back up: In the screenshot you can see the (now already fully functional) graphical launcher² for faircamp 2.0!

RE: https://mastodon.iftas.org/@iftas/116652198665234570

I just set up a reg donation to @iftas. The resources they make make me more comfortable running a instance. Makes me feel less alone in the process.

Afternoon Twters.

#IFTAS do an amazing job of helping to keep the Fediverse a safe and trustworthy space for all, and every penny spent doing this relies on donations. You can read about them and their 'power of one' campaign below.

So, can you spare just £1 a month to join their mission to keep this vital work going? Thank you. 🙂

Power of One

Help keep IFTAS online and independent. 500 supporters to donate the equivalent of just 1 a month to fund core infrastructure. Small change, big difference, be the one to join the 500.

Round numbers make me happy. Let's celebrate 700 people trying out Bandwagon.fm -- you all are amazing 🎉

And pretty consistently, about half of those have actually followed through to publish music on the Fediverse. Even for a free tool, anyone who's managed a marketing funnel would be proud of that.

If you are considering the Kagi search engine, there are aspects you should be aware of from an ethics perspective.

https://khevans.com/2025/08/21/kagi-ethics.html

”A portion of your fee goes towards Yandex, indirectly funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Vlad, the CEO, has stated that 2% of their total costs in 2024 goes towards Yandex. He has also stated that there is no intent of changing this.”

”At least other search engines like DuckDuckGo have halted their partnerships with Yandex. Kagi’s refusal to do so and Vlad’s firm support of Yandex is quite telling. If others have ceased partnering with Yandex, why can’t Vlad?”

”It’s worth mentioning that Kagi previously listed the sources they used in their search. It seems that they’ve now hidden that information on that page, seemingly contradictory to their “commitment to transparency.”

”A portion of your fee goes towards Elon Musk’s xAI, of X/Twitter, to support Grok in their AI assistant. Indeed, you can simply not use this assistant, however all paying users are effectively subsidizing the cost of the Grok API calls. There is no way to opt-out of this.”
Ethics of Kagi

Spoiler: Kagi doesn’t seem very ethical
