7. “Rhino Dance Marathon” by Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten is a retrospective of these choreographers’ partnership over 30 years. Interesting repackaging of different aspects of their work in multiple spaces: text, VR, film, exhibition, and more. For the actual performances, they were short pieces that I had a harder time connecting with; I think this is my own limitations and preferences though. 6. “Maldonne” by Leïla Ka. Breath and bodies are the only sounds for the first part: an incredible exploration of femininity and womanhood. Curious, then, to add music with lyrics and lip syncing after (“Je suis malade”). I prefer music without words in dance. Other short pieces followed varying in tone and music (more lyrics)—these weren’t as successful. But it closed again with a return and variation of the start. 5. “NOW WE ARE EARTH / An Orchestra” by Nicole Beutler. This didn’t know what it wanted to be: dance, musical theatre, theatre game, crowd-pleasing club scene from a theme park performance, cirque, choral … Girl, make up your mind. Edit yaself. It kinda pissed me off. I’m fine with any one of those things, mostly, but it just did. Not. Land. Dressing an actor in a full-on rat costume at the start didn’t live up to its promise. 4. “Romeo & Juliet - Up Close” by Erna Ómarsdóttir and Halla Ólafsdóttir. The dancers introduce themselves at the start with some tongue-in-cheek commentary. Then proceed to go way over the top in puncturing the seriousness of ballet. Campy, silly, absurd. The kind of performance that asks for something back but Amsterdam was not giving it to them. They gave it their all though. Act II and the short film it included felt unnecessary. Production photos. #Dance #JuliDans #Amsterdam #ArtVacation

3. “The Polish Project” by Maria Magdalena Kozłowska is old-school performance art, as my husband said. Beautiful singing and inventive percussion on a portable forklift and rolling platform. Reminded me of “Stomp” in places. Interesting use of film at times, but overall, could have done with some editing. Tells important stories of Polish people as an underclass in The Netherlands. Plus a man running around in his Calvin Kleins and construction gear was nice to see. Production photo.

2. “Weathered” by Faye Driscoll is another slow burn. But stick through it. By the end, I was clutching onto my husband. Part of the experience was watching/hearing other audience members’ reactions—easier to do sitting in the round. There were a lot of dance students that night, many were crying, in shock, this one young man’s mind clearly blown. I felt the same, drawn in by the piece to be part of something together. Extraordinary. Publicity photos from Driscoll’ssite.

1. “My Fierce Ignorant Step” by #ChristosPapadopoulos. A slow build, always in sync, starting with the subtlest of movements to a click track. Both the music and movement grow and recede in energy, reminding me of those birds that move together on land, all necks and legs. It’s giving ballroom with some hip-hop. But it works. The music was just as key as the dancers. Odd lighting cues towards the end though.
