I couldn't sleep last night so ended up reading John Muir's A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf, which describes his trip on foot from Ohio through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia when he was 29 years old. This was before he made his way to California.
Apart from the nature and impressive trail skills, I was fascinated that Muir made this trip in Sept-Oct of 1867βjust a year and a half after the end of the Civil War! People in Appalachia at that time were very suspicious and many of them had little to spare to help a wandering botanist. There were roving bands of Confederates-turned-robbers. I was so nervous for him!
