JNIM seized military outpost in Burkina Faso
The JNIM group, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has claimed the capture of a militia military outpost in the village of Bittou, located in the Tenkodogo region. This marks another sign of escalating jihadist activity in central Burkina Faso. The outpost was held by local militias cooperating with government forces. The attack comes amid growing instability across the Sahel region. JNIM continues to expand its influence, exploiting the weakness of state institutions.

Speaking with FRANCE 24's Sharon Gaffney, Dr Nathaniel Powell, West Africa Analyst at Oxford Analytica and Research Associate at Lancaster University's Centre for War and Diplomacy, explains that the jihadist group operating in Mali, JNIM, "does not appear to have the capability to seize and hold an urban area for any length of time, so Bamako is not yet under threat of being captured, but the long term prospects certainly do not look good".
