Civil rights icon, Greenville native Jesse Jackson dies at 84

Jesse Jackson, Greenville native and civil rights leader, dies at 84, leaving a legacy of activism, social justice, and historic campaigns.

GREENVILLE JOURNAL
Remembering my hero The Rev. Jessie Jackson, Jr. RIP. I had the privilege of being co-chair of his OC, Calif. 1984 campaign for president, and the chief strategist of his 1988 run in the OC. We had a pretty good showing in 88 when the ‘Rainbow Coalition’ was really going strong. We marched through barrios and ghettos, then stacked the county Democratic Convention, bussed in supporters, and came in 2nd in a crowded field of 8 in the straw poll. That was the next day’s headline. I took great pleasure in shaking up the staid, old-boy Democratic hierarchy. Jackson was, even then, a staunch supporter of Palestinian rights, which fit so well with his championing of the downtrodden and abused. I represented his campaign in a speech at the local Majlis - which served as OC’s mosque. #JessieJackson #BLM #RainbowCoalition #politics

Unless you were at The Million Man March, or watched it on T.V., this, for me, is the greatest speech of #JessieJackson. It starts at 26:40.
