P-51D Mustang, 'Quicksilver" This Mustang has been beautifully restored. However, the markings are a mixture - on purpose - of both WW2 and Korean War eras. This has been done to honour those pilots who flew the P-51 in both wars. C-47 with parachutist exiting! This C-47 was doing what it was intended to do - only over Barnes Regional Airport, Massachusetts, not Normandy on the 6th of June, 1944. Wearing the invasion stripes promulgated by the Allies at the very last moment (and with the paint often crudely applied by yard brooms), the C-47s, along with Short Stirlings and other aircraft, would make history that night. The parachutist is one of a 'stick' using authentic 'round' chutes replicating those of the period. #C47 #Douglas #DDay #WW2 #SecondWorldWar #Normandy #aircraft #aviation #paratrooper #parachutist #invasionstripes #invasion #France #Normandycampaign #BandofBrothers #Allies #BarnesRegionalAirport #airport #Massachusetts #USA #history #photography #avgeek #6thofJune #ShortStirling #parachute #roundchute #parachutejump #1944 #airport #airborne #USAAF
C-47A This example of the classic transport aircraft designed by Douglas was one of the workhorses of WW2. Seen here at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, this fine example of the breed is shown wearing the famous 'D-Day' stripes, and with a heavily weathered paint scheme, appropriate to the period film in which she had taken part. #IWM #Duxford #USAAF #WW2 #invasionstripes #DDay #aircraft #aviation #photography #aviationphotography #avgeek #ImperialWarMuseum #Douglas #C47 #history

North American Aviation P-51D Mustang. The P-51 was designed to meet a requirement from the American-based British Purchasing Commission during WW2. The BPC wanted North American to build Curtiss P-40s under licence, but North American said 'We can do better than that!' - and they did. However, it wasn't until the Mustang airframe was re-engined with the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin, that a star was born. Able to escort USAAF heavy bombers all the way to Berlin, it was a massive psychological blow to the Nazi regime. This example is being displayed at an air show in Massachusetts. #NorthAmericanAviation #P51 #Mustang #USAAF #WW2 #fighter #aircraft #Berlin #Curtiss #P40 #BritishPurchasingCommission #aviation #aircraft #photography #aviationPhotography #airdisplay #airshow #Massachusetts #USA #invasionstripes #Merlin #RollsRoyce
