Soo apparently LTO drives are vendor locked and that's why it doesn't work. It wasn't because of the libraries firmware version after all.

Also I learned that #IBM doesn't allow you to download the firmware update files directly from their website without an entitlement, but one of their windows apps allows you to get the latest version for connected devices anyway (thanks to someone on reddit for that hint). But sadly because of the above it didn't help.
