Given the expectation that it will be almost impossible to land an #R1 #tenure track position after finishing my #PhD, I find it even more disheartening that non-#university-affiliated #IRBs charge a minimum of $500 to review your independently done #research. That's so prohibitive for individuals who have expertise but no #academic post, and charging feels unethical to begin with.

Research was not reviewed by an IRB because the university team was only analyzing de-identified data. The research intervention was conducted by the company, not the university researchers.

This article covers a number of ethical issues including that there weren’t ethical protections for the teens and whether the data was truly de-identified.
