Immich Review

Immich is a photo and management system that you can self host for free and is available for many systems. I personally installed it on my low powered storage N

YOLO'd my life time archive of photos which I'd manage to smear across 2 locations because an external disk didn't mount and thus I'd been writing to the external disk before a reboot 3 months ago and the internal disk since.

#immich knew about all the files, but didn't understand they were in multiple places.

I ended up using find, comm, diff, stat and wc to convince myself there were no file clashes, though sme of the directory structures clashed then rsync to copy the files around.

Then, because permissions... reran the rsync with sudo.

restarted immich and so far... nothing looks broken.

Now to backup to remote storage.

Nächstes Projekt ist der eigentliche, lokale Homeserver mit paperless ngx, nextcloud, actual budget, einem Notfall - Passbolt, immich und wenn ich noch Lust drauf habe n8n. #selfhosted #paperlessngx #nextcloud #actualbudget #immich #passbolt #n8n

Of course one of options would be to import my whole library of photos directly into #immich instead.

But I have a bunch of folders which make sense vs almost flat structure of date oriented storage.

@fexd Again, hook, line and sinker, the consumer gets hooked on something "free" and then the fees come later. De-Google yourself now. Learn how to install Immich or at least get disciplined in your backup game.

Ran out of HD space on the laptop running Immich, but managed to move the upload directory to an external 1TB usb HD. Also have another external HD that has all my old home videos from 1990 to present. Immich handles videos better than Plex did. All old pre-Immich photo archives are referenced as an external library also. Will probably need a bigger HD or a NAS setup eventually.

Still very impressed with Immich overall. It is a great solution to get me away from Google Photos. The machine learning and face recognition works better than I expected.

Immich installed via Docker on Debian 12. VPN access via TailScale.

I just found 20 years worth of manually tagged images! I thought the tagging had been lost to the gods of software past.

People names, places, event names, all back.

So happy!!!

I got a plan for #Immich

1. backup date of current one
2. remove all Immich data
3. clean up photo archive (move Google Takeout from it, manually remove duplicates)
4. restart Immich with fresh archive
5. start adding takeouts etc
6. hope

#Immich is a fantastic piece of software. Truly awesome. That is all.
