There's a statue in Killarney to Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty (1898-1963), who was born in the town and worked in the Vatican from 1938 to 1960.
During the Second World War, he helped 6,500 Allied POW escapees and Jews to avoid capture by the Gestapo.
