In #Carboniferous, global #forests appeared, covering #tropical zones with tree-high #horsetails, #clubmosses, and #ferns. #Oxygen levels rose, and #CO2 was bound for transforming peat into lignite and #bituminous #coal. The climate later became colder i.a. due to the decreasing greenhouse gas leading to the Permo-Carboniferous Ice Age period.

UNM-led study uses ancient plant to decode Earth's climate history

A team of researchers at The University of New Mexico has uncovered how a peculiar, prehistoric plant might unlock new ways to reconstruct Earth's ancient climate. Led by UNM Earth and Planetary Sciences Professor Zachary Sharp, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) titled, “Extreme triple oxygen isotope fractionation in Equisetum” focuses on horsetails — hollow-stemmed plants that have thrived on Earth for more than 400 million years. The team’s findings reveal that water traveling through these plants undergoes such intense natural distillation that its oxygen isotope ratios resemble those found in meteorites or in extraterrestrial materials.

Preparing some herbarium sheets for display in our new dinosaur gallery. All of these plant groups – a fern, cycad, and horsetails – were around during dinosaur times.

Installation of this new gallery has been a little delayed but we're planning to open in October if all goes to plan.

Really quite impressive thicket of Great Horsetail (Equisetum telmateia) in this railway siding at Three Bridges. Fairly easy to ID even at a distance because it’s biiiig (1 metre tall or more) and has very pale, almost white jointed stems.

Eiliseltä pyörälenkiltä Mätäjoen/Mätäojan varrelta. Puusillan molemmin puolin kasvoivat kortteet korkeina. Kiehtovia, ikivanhoja kasveja, dinosaurusten ajoilta peräisin.

From my bike ride yesterday along the Mätäjoki/Mätäoja river. The wooden bridge was flanked on both sides by high-growing horsetails. Fascinating plants, ancient, from the days of the dinosaurs.

Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) grows fertile shoots in early spring and the typical non-fertile, many-branched green stalks later in the year.

Not exactly a bunch of flowers, but completely lovely in their own right. #Dutchmansrush #horsetails
Relatives of the giant #horsetails that used to grow as tall as trees, this ancient plant can be thought of as a living fossil. Their ancestral line dates back over three hundred million years.... We marvel over long-lived trees, but spare a moment to admire some horsetails. #TsoukeTerritory
